Hereditary optic neuropathies are characterised by bilateral, symmetric vision loss. Various inheritance patterns have been identified for these neuropathies, including autosomal dominant (dominant optic atrophy), autosomal recessive patterns (Wolfram Syndrome) and mitochondrial inheritance (Leber hereditary optic neuropathy)
