Normal Retinal Anatomy
The peripheral retina is defined as the area of retina between the equator and the ora serrata.
Anatomically, the equator may be identified by the location of the vortex vein ampullae. There is usually 4, but may be up to 10 of these ampullae in each eye, located at the equator.
The ora serrata is the junction of the retina and the ciliary body and is the anterior limit of the sensory retina.
