Overview

The underlying cause of a macular microhole is thought to be due to abnormal vitreomacular traction.

Macula microholes appear as a small reddish lesion at the fovea. OCT imaging normally shows a small focal discontinuation of the RPE, photoreceptors and/or external limiting membrane.

A similar clinical picture can be caused by sun-gazing (solar retinopathy) and blunt trauma.

Macula microholes are typically stable and have a good visual prognosis.
